Florida Troops to Teachers
The Troops to Teachers Program is a referral and placement assistance service that helps eligible military personnel begin a new career as public school teachers. The Program provides counseling assistance on teacher certification, and employment. Two forms of financial assistance are provided to qualified participants. They can receive either a stipend of up to $5000 to pay for certification requirements or a bonus of $10,000 if employed in a high need school. Participants who accept the financial assistance must teach for a minimum of three years. The program is open to retirees, active duty personnel leaving the service with six or more years of service, and Reservist/National Guard personnel with ten or more years of credited service. Participants must register for the program through the national office at Saufley Field in Pensacola, Florida. Active duty personnel can register if they are within one year of separation or retirement.
The Troops to Teachers Program is not a certification program. Each state has authority over certification requirements. Therefore, each participant must complete the certification requirements for the state in which they desire to teach. The Florida Troops to Teachers Program Office assists participants with the following:
- Florida certification requirements
- Options for completing the certification process
- Florida's teacher vacancy information
- Districts' employment procedures.
These services are provided to support each participant's career transition to the teaching profession. The Florida Troops to Teachers office will provide counseling services to the spouses of military personnel regarding the teaching profession in Florida.
