Achieving The Dream
RESEARCH
Achieving the Dream is working on many levels to advance knowledge about improving student outcomes at community colleges. In an effort to support the four participating Achieving the Dream institutions, Florida has been conducting and compiling research at a system and institutional level. As research is conducted for the four participating institutions, it is replicated for the 24 non-participants so that all institutions are benefiting. Information provided on this page will reflect the research conducted for all 28 institutions.
SLS Courses
The Division has been tracking students with complete placement test scores for several years. We restrict our cohorts to complete scores, i.e., scores in mathematics, writing and reading, in order to subdivide the cohort into those needing different types of remedial work prior to college level courses. The selected outcomes are earning an award, either a degree or certificate; transferring to the State University System, limited to the SUS due to data availability; or still enrolled in the Florida Community College System the final year of follow-up.
Taking an SLS course resulted in increased percentages of students achieving the selected outcomes no matter if they arrived college ready (defined as passing all three sections of the placement tests) or needed some level of remediation. This held true for full-time as well as part-time students and for those recurring Pell grants versus those not. We use Pell awards as a proxy for low-income. It was also true for our major race/ethnic groups - white, African American, and Hispanic.

Withdrawal Study
The College Preparatory Progression Study on Withdrawals is a longitudinal study that tracked a cohort of students for five years. The cohort consisted of students who were (a) first-time-in-college in Fall 1999, and (b) had scores from the College Placement Test for all three sections: reading, writing, and mathematics.
The study provides a comparison of rates of earning an award, transferring to the State University System, and/or remaining enrolled in the Florida Community College System for students who had 20% or more of their attempted courses end in withdrawal versus those who had less than 20%.
