NAEP is The Nation's Report Card

  • NAEP is an assessment administered at grades 4, 8, and 12 that reports academic achievement of our Nation’s students and allows comparison within a state by subgroup, across states and regions of the country, and with the nation as a whole.
  • NAEP is the nation’s only ongoing survey of what students know and can do in various subject areas (reading, mathematics, writing, and science at the state and national levels; U.S. history, geography, civics, economics, world history, foreign language, and the arts at the national level).
  • NAEP was designed as a survey assessment in 1969 to produce national results.
  • NAEP was expanded to produce state level results in 1990. Results for selected large urban school districts have been available since 2002.
  • NAEP's two major goals are to measure student achievement and to report changes in performance over time.
  • NAEP reports performance by subgroups of students, e.g., by gender, racial/ethnic group, English Language Learners (ELL), and participation in exceptional education programs.
  • NAEP assessments are implemented by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) with the help of contractors.
  • NAEP does NOT provide scores at the school or individual student levels.

The NAEP contact for the state of Florida is Michele Sonnenfeld. She can be contacted by e-mail at or by telephone at (850) 245-0513.
