Tampa Student Group Named "Chapter of The Year" By Junior State of America
The Junior State of America (JSA) awarded the student-run JSA Chapter at C. Leon King High School in Tampa with the "Professor E.A. Rogers Chapter of the Year Award." Students from the JSA Chapter at the high school gave a presentation which included a digital video and an archival scrapbook at the 2008 Florida Spring State Convention in Orlando.
Nine schools nationwide received the honor. The award is presented in honor of JSA’s founder, Professor Ernest Andrew Rogers, who maintained that one of the primary needs of a democracy is to train its youth in the essentials of good government.
The student-run, non-profit, nonpartisan organization prepares high school students for life-long involvement and responsible leadership in a democratic society. Judging was conducted by a panel of local high school teachers who serve as chapter advisors, and the decision was based on the chapter’s educational programming and civic involvement throughout the year.
Each winning chapter receives a lump-sum scholarship for members to attend one of the nationally-recognized Junior Statesmen Foundation Summer Programs at Georgetown, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford Universities. Additionally, the nine winning chapters will compete for the Junior State of America National Civic Impact Award and a $1,500 grant for future chapter activities.
