May 2008 "Just for Teachers" Newsletter
Message from DOE Teacher Liaison, Nicole Flesvig
Whether you are preparing for a much-needed break or on the lookout for professional development opportunities this summer, “Just for Teachers” has something for you. This end-of-year issue contains information ranging from summer opportunities for teachers to recent changes in legislation resulting from the 2008 Florida Legislative Session. Don’t forget that many of the money-saving offers provided during Teacher Appreciation Week are valid into the summer and beyond. If you missed the Teacher Appreciation newsletter earlier this month, these opportunities are always available for you via the “Just for Teachers” Web page, located at http://www.fldoe.org/justforteachers. Just click “Money-Saving Offers.”
During the summer break, the “Just for Teachers” monthly newsletter will be on hiatus; however, a variety of resources are always available to you via the “Just for Teachers” Web page located at http://www.fldoe.org/justforteachers. Once the school year resumes, you can look forward to more news and resources from the Florida Department of Education.
The Florida Department of Education is committed to ensuring that Florida educators have access to news and resources to keep you informed and maintains avenues to enable you to provide feedback to the Department. Your input, whether given via surveys, focus group discussions, committee participation, e-mail, or other contact, plays an important role in shaping educational policy in Florida.
On a personal note, I wanted to let you know that I have chosen to return to Collier County, where I began my K-12 teaching career. Although I will no longer be serving in the role of Teacher Liaison for the Florida Department of Education, I will serve teachers on a local level in a position with the Education Foundation of Collier County. It has truly been a pleasure serving you these past two years. During my time at the Department, I have had the opportunity to meet with many of you, and have been inspired by your passion and dedication to Florida’s children. Having come directly from the classroom to the Department, I am happy to say from experience, that the Commissioner and Department staff are exceptionally committed to Florida students and educators.
Spotlight on New Legislation
SB 1908: Designation of High School Grades
Passed during the 2008 Legislative Session, Senate Bill 1908 expands the criteria for grading high
schools to include: graduation rate, graduation rate of at-risk students, performance and
participation in accelerated learning (AP, IB, AICE, etc.), postsecondary readiness, and
end-of-course exams.
The bill stipulates the following:
- Allows the use of “rigorous, statewide, standardized” end-of-course exams developed or approved by the Department of Education.
- Allows an AP, IB, or AICE exam to count as an end-of-course exam.
- Increases the rigor of the Sunshine State Standards.
- Expands eligibility for the School Recognition Program to include schools that improve more than one letter grade and sustain that improvement the following year.
- By 2010-11, moves back the FCAT reading and math testing dates one month later in the school year with results back before the end of the school year.
- Prohibits FCAT “frenzy” (e.g., suspending classes for practice tests).
- Establishes credential levels (i.e., gold, silver, and bronze) for Ready to Work certification in statute.
- Creates designations for high school diplomas (e.g., major area of interest, AP, IB, AICE, dual enrollment, Ready to Work)
Sunshine State Standards
