Strategic Objectives

October 1, 2002

In support of Florida’s K-20 Goals and Strategic Imperatives, the Bureau of Educational Technology has identified a number of strategic objectives to be considered for inclusion in a formal Florida Educational Technology Plan. Formidable new challenges coupled with limited resources require that support priorities be established. The Florida Ed-Tech Plan is expected to address ongoing areas of critical need as well as emerging educational technology program requirements. Florida’s educational technology planning process will support achievement of long-term NCLB: Enhancing Education Through Technology program goals. Foremost among those goals is improving student academic achievement.

  • Complete development of and maintain a state level educational technology plan that reflects the current needs of Florida’s K-20 education system. Anticipate formal plan approval by May 1, 2003.
  • Improve learning opportunities for students through the appropriate integration of educational content delivery systems and instructional tools into the curriculum.
  • Identify and develop appropriate methods and strategies to measure and monitor student and teacher progress towards achievement of technology proficiency and literacy standards. The following standards and practices will impact and provide a foundation for this effort: (1) Florida Sunshine State Standards; (2) Florida Educator Accomplished Practices; (3) National Educational Technology Standards (NETS); and (4) NCATE/National Standards for Technology in Teacher Preparation.
  • Support the development of comprehensive educational technology clearinghouse resources that will facilitate best practice dissemination, professional research-based project designs, and effective technology program replication.
  • Maintain and enhance instructional television programming delivered through the Florida Knowledge Network. Expand and strengthen technical and engineering services provided in association with that effort.
  • Support the development of a robust state technology infrastructure and provide the coordination necessary to ensure effective utilization of available services by students, teachers, administrators and the educational community at large.
  • Continue administrative and technical support efforts in association with the federal E-RATE program.
  • Continue ongoing efforts to achieve long-term educational technology goals and pillars that were adopted in conjunction with the federal Technology Literacy Challenge Fund grant program.
  • Maintain and enhance essential services required to promote effective implementation of technology initiatives and programs. (1) Technology Resources Survey; (2) School district technology plan review and approval services; (3) Grant program coordination and follow-up reporting; (4) Web-based guidance and program implementation information; (5) Technology integration support; (6) Coordination of intensive and targeted professional development opportunities and programs; and (7) Maintain Florida Ed-Tech Dimensions.
